Benito De Palermo Gold-Tint Medal.
Also known as Benedict the Moor, Benito De Palermo Patronage was an Italian Franciscan friar in Sicily in the 1500's. This black man of African origin was the son of slaves. It is believed that his parents worked on a plantation near Messina, however he received freedom from his masters after his birth and in his early years he earned his living as a shepherd. Upon joining his monestary, he was assigned the job of cook. But eventually, despite his illiteracy, he was elected prior because of his extraordinary piety and humility. His patronage includes African Missions and African Americans.
