In the 4th century, a vengeful bandit Moses the Black terrorized northeast Africa with his tribe of felons until he was moved to conversion after seeking asylum in a monastery. He became monk and priest in Egypt, as well as a notable Desert Father. Having totally given up his violent ways, he was later martyred for refusing to take up arms against thieves raiding his monastery. His feast day is August 28.
