Saint Josephine Bakhita was born in the Darfur region of southern Sudan and at the age of 7 was kidnapped and sold into slavery. She was resold several times and endured much physical turmoil. She was eventually given to a Italian family and became a nanny to the young daughter, whom she accompanied to Venice’s Institute of the Catechumens, where Josephine fell in love with the Catholic faith.
Josephine entered the Institute of St. Magdalene of Canossa in 1893 and made her profession three years later. She was an incredible example of perseverance in times of great difficulty and suffering,
